NEW!! - Version 18 (04-Dec-2017)
The Electronic Catalogue of Weevil Names is a project in progress.
Ultimately it will contain all family, genus and species-group names in the Curculionoidea, a group of beetles with 62,000 or more described species which includes many important insects, including the bark beetles (Scolytinae) and powder-post beetles (Platypodinae).
Originally based on Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal’s (1999) catalogue of weevil family and genus names and its two addendas (Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal, 2002; Lyal & Alonso-Zarazaga, 2006), augmented with the catalogue of Scolytinae and Platypodinae names (Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal, 2009), now it contains at least by name all the taxa described up to 2016, inclusive of species-group names (started in 2012 and updated since), which have been found in current referential literature or have been sent by colleagues, a fact that we appreciate very much.
Almost all species-group names up to 1806 have been checked against their originals and adequately qualified according to the
International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). Many mistakes have been corrected (e.g. valid names that turned out to be misidentifications, misspellings, etc.) and many duplicate records have been deleted. Genus and family-group names are checked up to 1999. A considerable effort has been made in literature, and now the database contains 38,000 references on weevils, but not all of these are visible because they have not yet been revised and, as far as possible, dated.
Currently the database contains some 180,000 names, and in the case of species-group names, the validation proceeds in a chronological order.
Version 17 (01-Apr-2014)
The Electronic Catalogue of Weevil Names
is a project in progress.
Ultimately it will contain all family, genus and
species-group names in the Curculionoidea, a group of beetles with some 60,000
described species which includes many important insects, including the bark
beetles (Scolytinae) and powder-post beetles (Platypodinae).
Currently the database contains some 170,000
names, including all generic and family-group names, in their current taxonomic
position, and based on Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal's (1999, 2002) catalogue of
weevil family and genus names. Species-group names are being added, but
are not yet all present nor checked against original publication or current
of names from secondary sources is finished and considered complete as of 31st December
2012. We will continue checking names from the original sources and updating the
nomenclature, deleting duplicates and unnecessary records, and adding new features
to the display and contents to the database. We will be very grateful if any mistake
or absence is notified.
